Radha, a local, who has started to collect water from the plant said the water is tastier than river water supplied through taps. The purified water would be stored in a separate tank to ensure round-the-clock availability of the water. The high-efficiency plants can produce 1,000 l of purified water in an hour. The unit will dispense 25 l of purified water. Residents can draw water after inserting a Rs 5 coin into the coin box. The administration also plans to extend the programme to all the wards of the town panchayat after a few months.

The cost for the plants is Rs 6 lakh each. These places have a large floating population. According to town panchayat chairman S J Srinivasan five spots near the bus stand and town panchayat office have been selected for setting up the plants. The first of these plants was inaugurated by state minister for revenue and PWD O Paneerselvam on Sunday. To address these issues, the town panchayat administration came up with the plan to pump up saline water and purify it with the help of RO plants set up near overhead tanks. Usually, frequent breaks and leaks in pipelines affect water supply and the ground water is not potable due to its high salinity in Thevaram. Thevaram is the first place in the district to get RO water treatment facility. Using the new RO facilty, locals will get 25 litres purified water for just Rs 5. As the town on the foothills of the Western Ghats depends on water through pipes running for 40 km from Lower Camp, people had difficulty in accessing potable water regularly. MADURAI: A reverse osmosis plant has been unveiled for the use of people residing in remote Thevaram in Theni district.
